Cognitive Hypnotherapy for Depression | Online UK & West London
Depression isn't just feeling sad — it's an ongoing and destructive downward spiral of emptiness, negativity and isolation. Symptoms include feelings of hopelessness, low self esteem, a sense of meaninglessness, lack of energy, and an inability to find joy in things you previously enjoyed. Many people experiencing depression also struggle with anxiety.
Depression can feel all-encompassing- as though the heaviness is simply who you are, rather than a state your nervous system has become stuck in. But depression is not a fixed condition or a personality trait. It is a pattern, maintained by the subconscious mind and nervous system, and patterns can change.
What is happening in the nervous system during depression?
Depression is often understood purely as a chemical imbalance- but this is an incomplete picture. While neurochemistry is involved, depression is also deeply connected to how the nervous system responds to perceived threat, loss, and chronic stress.
When the nervous system has been under sustained pressure- through trauma, loss, relationship difficulty, or prolonged stress- it can shift into a state of shutdown or collapse. This is the body's protective response to overwhelm, but when it becomes chronic it shows up as the flatness, disconnection, and hopelessness characteristic of depression.
This nervous system understanding is important because it means there are direct, effective ways to work with depression that go beyond talking about how you feel- addressing the underlying patterns in the body and subconscious mind that are maintaining the low state.
"Since having a handful of sessions with Ella my mind has settled- and I thought that would never happen. I finally have some control over my mind and so many new coping skills and exercises.
Ella was kind, professional and so calming to talk to, and has transformed my thinking. I no longer feel trapped in my mind after years of torturing myself."
How Cognitive Hypnotherapy helps with depression
Cognitive Hypnotherapy for depression can help create new neural pathways- away from habitual negative thinking, and towards more optimistic and realistic thought processes. Rather than just addressing the symptoms, Cognitive Hypnotherapy looks at the root causes of depression and encourages you to create a fresh and more helpful way of looking at yourself, your life, and the world around you.
Cognitive Hypnotherapy creates change in the subconscious thought processes that are currently keeping you stuck. This approach encourages you to be kind to yourself, to understand your mind, and develop healthy habits- creating a positive upward spiral out of depression and towards hope and happiness.
Somatic work supports this process by helping to gently reintroduce a sense of safety and aliveness in the body- which is often the first thing to return before mood begins to lift.
TRE can also be helpful where depression is held physically- as a persistent heaviness, tension, or flatness in the body- offering a direct route to releasing stored stress that talking alone may not reach.
This work forms part of the wider Breath Body Mind Method.
Depression is often closely connected to low self esteem, stress and trauma- addressing one often has a positive ripple effect across all of them.
