Hypnotherapy for Anxiety

They say anxiety is the thief of joy.

If you are feeling anxious and its effecting your quality of life, you may feel stuck- but you don’t need to stay there.

Why does anxiety create such strong physical symptoms?

We all experience anxiety from time to time- that low-level feeling of dread that can show up as racing thoughts, shakiness, a sinking feeling in your stomach, tightness in your chest, or a sense that the future looks bleak. When it lingers, life can start to feel small and exhausting.

The thing is, anxiety is not a weakness. It is a nervous system that has learned to stay on high alert.

When that alarm system keeps firing, your body reacts as if danger is present- even when it isn’t. The good news is that this pattern can be updated.

If you feel frightened by your own thoughts, unable to switch off, or constantly scanning for what might go wrong, it doesn’t mean you are broken. Your nervous system is trying to protect you- its just doing its job too well. When this happens, it can get stuck in a state of dysregulation- a bit like a smoke alarm that won’t switch off.

What is nervous system dysregulation?

When anxiety becomes persistent, your nervous system can get stuck in a protective state. This is sometimes called nervous system dysregulation. This can feel like an inability to relax, racing thoughts, tension in your body, or a tendency to numb or zone out without wanting to.

Your brain’s job is to keep you safe. When it senses danger, it activates the fight-or-flight response- increasing heart rate, muscle tension, alertness and breathing rate so you can respond quickly.

For some people, this alarm system becomes overactive. The body begins reacting as if there is ongoing danger, even when nothing threatening is happening. When that protective response stays switched on for long periods, it can create the physical and mental symptoms we recognise as anxiety.

Thankfully, the nervous system is adaptable. With the right support, it can learn to feel safe again and return to a more balanced state. So, what might that support look like?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy helps you shift the subconscious patterns that keep anxiety in place. By working beneath surface-level thinking, we can reduce the cycle of fear and anticipation that fuels anxious states. As your nervous system learns that it is safe, physical tension begins to ease and your mind can quieten.

TRE offers an additional way to discharge stored stress and tension. By allowing the body to release protective holding patterns, many people experience a greater sense of physical ease and stability.

Breath re-education using the Buteyko Method helps calm the stress response. Anxiety often disrupts breathing patterns, which in turn amplifies physical symptoms. Learning to breathe in a more regulated way sends clear safety signals to the nervous system.

Its worth knowing that the same protective nervous system patterns that drive anxiety can also contribute to persistent pain.

If you’d like to understand this more deeply, you can read my article explaining why chronic pain persists and what you can do about it.

When the alarm system is constantly activated, sensitivity increases across the body. And this alarm can be dialled down. When your nervous system feels safer, your thoughts begin to settle and your body becomes more predictable.
